The Special Economic Zone Authority in Duqm (Sezad) has signed an agreement with Dhofar Fisheries and Food Industries Company for land to develop a factory for fish packaging and caning.
The RO10-million ($26 million) project will also produce fish oil, said an Oman News Agency report.
The usufruct agreement was signed on behalf of Sezad by Yahya bin Said Al-Jabri, chairman of the Sezad, and Dhofar Fisheries and Food Industries Company chairman Mahdy Mohamed Hassan Hosny.
Sezad has allocated a plot of land at the Fishery Industries Zone in Duqm for this project.
The project will have a total annual production capacity of around 30,000 tons. It is anticipated to produce around 2 million cartons of sardine fish with a total marketing value of about RO11 million; about 500,000 carton of tuna with a value of RO7 million; and about 5000 tons of crushed fish with a total value of RO2.2 million.
The project is expected to come on stream in the second quarter of 2020, creating around 150 job opportunities, the report said.
